We watched the weather and decided to proceed with our February meeting and auction at Bethesda Senior Center before getting cooped up again! Wise move! Kathy Parent was presented a grant from GMGA for Archie’s Garden at McDaniel Farms! We all had a great time bidding on the silent auction items and Dan Smith was a super auctioneer and many members and guests went home with some neat things. The auction raised over $1,200. January 2014 General Meeting
Our January meeting featured our own member, Mary Bachner, of the Atlanta Audubon Society speaking on the topic “Creating a Backyard Wildlife Sanctuary”. She explained how creating a wildlife sanctuary in our backyards is such an important commitment to conserving and protecting our environment by providing these essential elements: Shelter, Food Sources, Feeders, Water and Nesting Sites. Members and local property owners were encouraged to establish their yards as beneficial habitats for wildlife, and when requirements are met, homeowners can receive signs stating that their property is registered as a “wildlife sanctuary” with the Atlanta Audubon Society. Dr. Chappell is the UGA Faculty Liaison and Education Chairperson for the Georgia Green Industry Association and interacts regularly with other Horticulture Trade Associations. Dr. Chappell has published several articles focusing on the use of native plants in traditional landscape design and the title of his presentation was “Native Plants You Should Know”. Members and guests enjoyed the presentation on native trees, shrubs, woody vines, and perennials. Attendees were also treated to a presentation from Rosalie Tubre on Lanier Children’s Community Garden, one of GCMGA’s 2013 grant recipients. Related Images:
