Our August 21, 2014 meeting hosted Ellen Honeycutt as our featured speaker. Ellen considers herself to be an average gardener with perhaps an above-average passion about it! She watched her dad putter around the yard growing up but didn’t get bitten by the bug until the mid-1990s and then was introduced to the concept of “native plants” in 2000 and joined the Georgia Native Plant Society. Fostering an appreciation for native plants is now a passion and Ellen loves teaching others how to use native plants in their gardens. Our knowledgeable speaker gave an excellent presentation of Native Plants of North Georgia and listed them in order of bloom time. With her permission, the list she provided for handouts is copied here. Please click on the link below to see the document. Native Shrubs of North Georgia Related Images:

Gwinnett Tech 2014 Horticultural Scholarships Awarded
Horticultural education is a primary mission of the Gwinnett County Master Gardeners Association (GCMGA) through sharing our knowledge with the community and fostering advanced education. Gwinnett Master Gardeners have a long-standing relationship with Gwinnett Tech in providing educational programs for our members and supporting mutual goals. To support area horticultural students who need a helping hand, GCMGA started with a memorial scholarship established by the family of Master Gardener Helen Dyer several years ago. In June, we again funded two scholarships at Gwinnett Technical College. The scholarship funds will be awarded for the 2014 fall semester to two qualifying students. GCMGA members will have the opportunity to meet the scholarship recipients at a GCMGA meeting next year. As a qualification requirement for the scholarships, the students will make a presentation to the organization on their horticultural career goals. Related Images:
Pinckneyville Community Center
On July 9 , 2014 several energetic Gwinnett County Master Gardeners built a wooden arbor at the Pinckneyville Community Center Garden. The garden is one of the Gwinnett County Master Gardeners Extension Volunteers project. Under the guidance of Jane Burke, who designed the garden and the arbor, members used a post hole digger, mixed and poured cement, cut lattice, then inserted lags and assembled the arbor. Those who helped gained experience and were given plans of the design. Please go by the Pinckneyville Community Center and see the finished project. Winnie White, Jane Burke, Latha Yatabe and Joyce Teel. Lou Young carefully checks the level of the arbor post. Photos were taken by Winnie White, a master gardener and one the volunteers.
