Tony Gobert was our featured speaker for the July 21, 2014 meeting. His topic was “The Importance of Buying and Eating Locally Grown Food Products”. Tony shared quite a bit of information about what Gwinnett Tech is doing in a pioneer program on Urban Agriculture and why it is critical for us to support our local farmers. The interesting bit (for me) was we are now in the third generation of people who are used to shopping in grocery stores. It will take a change in thinking for the existing generation and we, as Master Gardeners can help. It was a very informative meeting! Tony is a Horticultural Program Assistant at Gwinnett Technical College. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree at Southern University and Agricultural and Mechanical at Baton Rouge, LA and an Associates of Arts, Applied Horticulture and Horticultural Business services degree from Gwinnett Technical College. Remembering these Ladies
Sue Shaw wanted to honor deceased members Marion Monk and Sarah Goss for their contributions to GCMGA. These ladies were early and long-time members of the association and served on the board and various committees. This last year, we also lost Kay Phiel and Joyce Cowan, both active ladies and former board members. Wednesday, in their honor, two “Camillla’s Blush” native azaleas were planted at Bethesda Senior Center by Sue, Jackie Kujawa, Tricia Moakler and Becky Wolary. Related Images:
Shiloh Elementary School Project
The Shiloh Elementary School Project – “Granny’s Garden” – was started on April 22, 2014 with the planting of the garden and was finished on Mary 15. Money was given for plants by the local PTA. Labor was provided by 3rd and 4th grade girls, under the guidance of teacher, Mary Johnson, and GCMGA Master Gardener Jackie Kujawa. It was educational for the girls as to how to plant, water and take care of a flower garden. It was a good experience for all. Related Images:
