Gwinnett Master Gardeners joined Master Gardeners throughout Georgia for a special “Master Gardeners Day” hosted by Gibbs Gardens and the Georgia Master Gardeners Association. We enjoyed small group educational tours led by Master Gardeners who have detail experience and knowledge of the Gardens. The gardens were in full daffodil bloom and the weather was delightful. Jim Gibbs spoke on his 25 year vision, the gardens development and plans for future opportunities as we gathered under the event tent for lunch. He answered questions and gave tips on how we can use his concepts to enhance gardens of any size. Related Images:
March 2013 GCMGA Meeting – “The Exciting World of Plant Propagation”
Dr. Bodie Pennisi, Associate Professor and Extension Landscape Specialist at the University of Georgia, was the guest speaker at the GCMGA meeting on March 18. Dr. Bodie spoke on Seeds, Cuttings, and Scions: The Exciting World of Plant Propagation. Plants have evolved an amazing array of ways to replicate themselves and adapt to the environment, and we humans have taken advantage of those since antiquity. Dr. Bodie teaches an undergraduate course on Plant Propagation and shared highlights from this course with the audience. She explored the biology of seeds, cuttings, and grafting and shared tips for successful techniques of plant propagation. Related Images:
2012 Photo Contest Awards
Photography is all about telling a story through capturing a unique moment in time and sharing the experience with others. It is another means that many gardeners use to express their love of gardening and the creatures a healthy environment supports. As with gardening, photography takes time and practice to develop as an art. Creativity is required to get the perfect angle, portray the personality of a singular subject, and enhance a landscape scene. Patience in waiting for the “perfect” nature shot is just the first of many aspects in achieving award-winning photographs. Framing the “star of the show” in an uncluttered background, taking advantage of natural light and reflections, and incorporating the surrounding environment are just a few of the technical skills used by our 2012 contest winners to tell their story.
