In March, member Shirley Bohm is shown receiving one of two ‘Silver Star’ awards presented by the Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation department for her Volunteer Service in 2014 at Vines Gardens Park in Loganville. This was a complete surprise to her. She had logged 90 ½ volunteer hours there last year and is also the Master Gardener Project Coordinator for the park with an excellent crew of Gwinnett Master Gardeners who meet every Tuesday to help out at the Park. Shirley also implemented the quarterly public class sessions last year which some were offered as a hands-on demonstration where the public were invited to participate. In the audience at the ‘2014 Volunteer Appreciation Reception was Tina Fleming, the Parks Division Director and Phil Hoskins who is the new Deputy County Administrator. Congratulations Shirley – an award well deserved!!! Related Images:

June 2015 Monthly Meeting
Our June 15th meeting featured Karan Rawlins, the Invasive Species Coordinator for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health at the University of Georgia in Tifton. Karan covered the entire range of invasives – not only plants, but animals. Who knew feral hogs were not native to the United States? She also shared information about First Detectors, a project that will offer tools and training to enable Master Gardeners ways to identify and report invasive species infestations. Karen is a great speaker and those who attended enjoyed the program. Related Images:
