By Kay M. Phiel, Gwinnett County Master Gardener In early May, 2011, a friend and I took a Road Scholar/Elderhostle program to the Black Hills, Bad Lands, and Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. We were surprised to see a Prairie Homestead out in the very desolate-looking Bad Lands area of western South Dakota. It was raining fairly heavily that day so we didn’t explore as much as we might have. I picked up a brochure just before we reboarded the bus and was surprised to read a portion on Iris Gardens. Download Flyer PDF Entries are to be brought to the fairgrounds on Saturday, September 17th from 8:00 to 10:30 a.m. You do not have to pre-register any of the home garden exhibits. Directions to the fairgrounds can be found at www.gwinnettcountyfair.com Exhibits must be grown by name on entry or will be disqualified. Pick up will be Monday, September 26th from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. After that time, entries will be disposed of. You can pick up your prize money at this time also. Prize money: 1st – $7.00, 2nd – $5.00, and 3rd – $4.00. Exhibits with no competition will receive 1st place ribbon and 2nd place money. Judging of entries will be 10:30 a.m. on the day of take-in. This year we have moved to another location and have expanded to be even bigger and better. Here are some of the plants that will be available: Hellebores, native azaleas, Iris, day lilies, hosta, ferns, annuals, perennials, and much more. Our plants are locally “dug” in our community, so they are the “tried and true” for doing great in our area.
