Gwinnett County Master Gardeners experienced the best of spring at the 25th Silver Anniversary Southeastern Flower Show hosted by the Southeastern Horticultural Society at the Cobb Galleria Centre. The theme for this year’s event was “What’s Old is New Again” and featured magnificent gardens and fine antiques. The event promoted conservation and awareness of the natural environment through education, horticultural excellence, and art. In addition to garden displays, exhibits, and educational speakers, garden-related shopping was plentiful. Many GCMGA members volunteered to design and setup a variety of booths for the show, and served as hosts to help make this event a success. Related Images:

February 2013 GCMGA Meeting – “Adding Interest to the Garden with Foliage, Berries, and Bark”
Dr. Wilf Nicholls, Director of the Georgia Botanical Gardens, gave a thought provoking talk on the concepts of adding winter interest to the garden with beautiful foliage, berries, and bark at the meeting on February 11. As a native of London, England, Dr. Nicholls shared his deep knowledge of plants on both edges of the continent and how they can be used to brighten our winter landscapes. His decades of experience in the conservation of native flora, plant research, breeding and the introduction of new plants to horticulture added even more interest to dispelling our “winter blues.” He highlighted his many and varied experiences in the breeding and release to the public of the Mandarin honeysuckle and the Starbright mock orange shrub, and his service as the principal investigator of the Plant Atlantic program for ornamental plant research and development. Whole Foods Provides Donation for Grant Projects
The Gwinnett County Master Gardeners Association had the opportunity to partner with Whole Foods Market in providing informational tables on healthy eating and horticulture in the State Bridge Road store on January 16. For participation in this event, Whole Foods Market has provided a donation to support GCMGA project grants. To make this event a success, 27 members contributed their time and expertise to educated the community in the importance of growing healthy foods and promoting a healthy environment. Special recognition goes to Rosalie Tubre for coordinating this event with Whole Foods Market. The GCMGA will continue to provide monthly “Ask a Master Gardener” events at Whole Foods Market each month. These events provide an opportunity for MG Extension Service volunteer hours and the potential for other partnerships with Whole Foods. Related Images:
